The Nevada County Narrow Gauge railroad was incorporated in 1874 with headquarters in Grass Valley, California. It was primarily built to service the gold mines in Placer County and Nevada County. This short line narrow gauge railroad had 22 miles of track that serviced Colfax to Nevada City.
The lock pictured is manufactured by T. Slaight with a Dec. 12, 1866 patent date.
Generally speaking, a lock may post-date a patent date by 7-10 years, putting this lock in the 1870’s range. Since the NCNG RR was incorporated in 1874, this may have been one of the first switch locks used on the railroad.
