Notes

The Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad was primarily chartered to haul coal from Central Pennsylvania to the ports at Rochester and Buffalo. The BR&P existed as “BR&P Railroad” during the early days of construction from 1881 to 1885, as part of a series of construction companies. Those initial construction companies were later re-organized as the “BR&P Railway” from 1887 to 1932.
In lock and key collecting, a small detail as whether the road title was referred to as a “railroad (RR)” or a “railway (Ry)” could help determine the year range of the artifact.
At face value, this lock is marked as the “BR&P RR,” which would place the lock in the years between 1881 to 1885, when its company title was “railroad” rather than “railway.”
This BR&P RR Dayton lock is rare with few examples known.
